Theatre arts

Utilizing the elements and principles of stage design, it covers the development of concepts for visual narrative through critical script and text analysis, research and discussions of professional best practice.

Practical projects explore the relationships between environment, object and text and enact examples of visual metaphor and storytelling via varied mediums (specifically scenery, light, projection and costumes).

Learning Outcomes in this course

  • Analyze and discuss various texts, themes and design metaphors to develop a deeper understanding of theatrical storytelling and visual communication.

  • Recognize and apply the language, elements and principles of stage design.

  • Examine and practice a range of drawing techniques used to effectively communicate theatrical design intent, from initial sketches to detailed renderings.

  • Reproduce, discuss, and illustrate the use of color mediums (paint, ink, light…).

  • Experience live theatre and reflect upon observations.

Instructor

Brian Healy, Associate Professor at Cal Poly SLO

Brian Healy holds an MFA in Theatrical Design and a B.A. in Theatre. He has taught lighting design, scenic design, stagecraft and dramatic theory for 23 years. He is an Associate Professor of Stage Design and Technical Production, and Department Chair of Cal Poly Theatre and Dance. Between the Pacific Coast and the Great Lakes, Brian has worked at or with such companies as Sundance Resort (Utah), Langston Hughes Performing Arts Center (Seattle), Long Beach Opera (CA), Windy City Music Theatre (Chicago), and Hot House Theatre (St. Louis).
