Advanced Spanish Language Studies

An advanced Spanish-language course designed to cultivate the next generation of bilingual leaders through high-level training in public speaking, argumentation, and civic engagement. Tailored for high-achieving high school students, who desire to improve their voice, impact and action, this course immerses participants in professional Spanish, providing them with the tools to communicate effectively on pressing issues and advocate for real-world solutions with clarity and confidence. Through the final project students will delve into issues they care about, strengthening their ability to craft persuasive arguments that are culturally informed and resonate with diverse audiences.

The program also emphasizes responsible and ethical advocacy, encouraging students to become thoughtful, culturally aware leaders. By engaging in collaborative exercises and constructive critique, students strengthen their teamwork and peer mentorship skills—essential assets in any academic or professional environment.

Requirements: Students must be fluent in Spanish or entering an AP Spanish course.

 

Learning Outcomes in this course

Proposed Activities

  • Students will visit a local organization to develop vocabulary and knowledge to prepare an advocacy strategy.

  • Students may also visit a city council meeting or policy workshop to observe the language and structure of formal dialogue and debate.

  • Students will engage with topics impacting California communities, including environmental sustainability, labor rights, and water resource management.

  • Each student selects an area of focus, developing a research-based, solution-oriented presentation.

Dr. Marion Hart, Professor at Cal Poly SLO

Dr. Marion Hart is an experienced educator and program coordinator specializing in language instruction, bilingual advocacy and civic engagement. With almost two decades in language education, Marion is also the Director of Spanish Language Debate. Her work focuses on building students’ skills in argumentation, public speaking and cultural awareness, preparing them for success in academic and civic spaces. Marion has a Master’s and Doctorate from UC Irvine and is a dedicated advocate for programs that support bilingual education and community engagement across California.
